One thing happened, though, that made me wonder if we’ve taken airport security too far.

It seems to me that, in the absence of a willingness to engage in profiling, everyone must be treated with equal suspicion. More than one child has been used to kill others so the fact that the children were young should, by itself, not prevent an airport screener from waving a wand that might detect a danger. I'm not an explosives expert but how much explosives would it take to put a good sized hole in the fusilage of a passenger plane. It may not be enough to bring it down but it may be enough to kill and injure a lot of passengers so the smallness of the backpack should not necessarely keep a screener from doing her or his job.
