The End of HBO, Cinemax and Pay-Per View Porn?
Senator Ted Stevens (R) from Alaska and Congressman Joe Barton (R) from Texas have expressed an interest in expanding their "clean up of the airwaves" campaign to include paid cable and satellite radio transmissions. I guess the cable industry is going to have to step up their contributions to Senator Ted Stevens and Congressman Joe Barton because according to figures compiled from last year they haven't been paying much attention to these guys.
With the advent of cable and satellite broadcasts Stevens feels these laws for governing public airwaves are antiquated and outdated and should cover both types of broadcasts.
Stevens was asked whether the government has the right to regulate paid services and his response was.
"I think that's wrong," he said. "I think we have the same power to deal with cable as over-the-air because of the combination of the two."
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the entire cable TV network and satellite shows transmitted over equipment owned and maintained by the corporations? Just because it comes out of the same box as public broadcasts gives the government the right to regulate?
Barton isn't far behind Stevens slanted way of thinking.
"If we can work out the Constitutional questions, I'd be supportive of that. I think they ought to ... to the extent it's possible, (play by) the same rules," Barton told reporters. "It's not fair to subject over-the-air broadcasters to one set of rules and not subject cable and satellite to no rules. So I'm supportive of what the senator says."
I think what Barton was trying to say is that they just need to figure out a way to get around that pesky first amendment and they should be good to go with the beginning to the end of HBO or pay-per-view porn. That would suck! (to lose HBO I mean, I'm still waiting for the next season of the Soprano's to come out).
I thought the Republicans were for a non-intrusive government. I guess they only want a non-intrusive government when it applies to corporate governance but individual rights should be regulated so that we can all become as righteous as them.
Oh, and they also want to regulate what kind of streaming media or language that is posted on your website or blog. So until that regulation is passed you can go fuck yourselves and your self righteous bullshit because I pay for this crap. If you personally don't like your TV stations then just cancel your cable subscription and leave the rest of us the fuck alone!

Funny, I still haven't heard any outcry from the Religious Right regarding Fox and other popular Right-Wing media institution's programming like "Desperate Housewives" or "Who's Your Daddy". No, these idiot scumbags want to pursue the usual non-issue red herring. Why? Because, like School Choice, like the unconstitutional Partial Birth Abortion ban, these scumbags have no intention of actually writing succussful legislation. They just want to rile the rabble, to push the buttons of the Bible Belters and Pro-Lifers and the God, Gays, and Guns crowd.
I am ashamed to be an American these days. Very, very ashamed. And not because these Right-Wing scumbags are doing this, but because all too many of my fellow "citizens" (for lack of a better word... Plebians, perhaps?) swallow this phoney crappola hook, line and sinker. I remember, Steven Wright once said, "Fish hear country music in their heads." Fish, they're all fish.

Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed today. I wouldn't go as far as being ashamed to be american but I would say that I'm ashamed that we have Americans like these two within our borders. Not to mention, how the fuck do we get a senator from Alaska to be third in the line of succession if the vp and the next person get knocked off? I hear the electorial college laughing at all us silly non-educated citizens!

We live in scary and perilous times...where are the people at the gates of the White House demanding answers? Great quote by Jefferson, btw.

They were sent on a wild goose chase by Karl Rove, looking for the holy grail or something. Yea, I like Jefferson, we could use someone like him right now.

The Republicans, left to their devices, would be the first to censor our households from porn while the Democrats, left to their devices, would censor God from the public. Somehow, we are just standing by and letting these two issues become "partisan" when really, they are assaults upon our personal freedoms. God, I'm getting sick of those two parties! Throw them ALL out on their asses and take the country back, I say.

Airman,
How the heck does removing "God" from the public domain effect your rigts in any way shape or form?

Toning down the Sopranos would be the last straw. First, HBO is making me wait like 2 years for a new episode and if there is any regulation that makes it more "family friendly," I will lose it.
I don't want to wait 2 years to see Tony make love to a woman with her totally covered and then go fire a traitor to the family instead of chopping his head off.

I can't help thinking that it all comes back to the money, somehow. Maybe killing cable is the payback to Rupert Murdock for all he's done for the party...

Democrats don't want to remove God from life. There's only a portion of us that even care to remove him from public places. I personally think if someone wants to pray in public, fine. If a courthouse wants to post the 10 Commandments, fine. They're a good set of rules to live by. Noone has a right to tell you what you can and can't watch or say so long as you don't infringe on someone else's rights. The Republicans say they're for small government but they are also for a religious ordered society too. Many of them are in any case.

Jersey, that's not the point, censorship is censorship, bro, both parties want to do it and that was my point.
