The Decay of An Educated Electorate
Contributed by Jersey McJones;
Let's take a look at what's wrong with America and how that precludes the developement of an educated electorate...
It is the gradual social and infrastructural decay brought on by the sleazy corporate media entertainment sector, the dumbing down of the American body politic by that same sleazy corporate media thanks to Reagan's evil destruction of the Fairness Doctrine on the PUBLIC AIRWAVES that have amounted to 24 hour free advertising for the GOP for a generation, the stagnant wages spanning an entire generation brought about by Reagan and Greenspan and their "inflation control", the reactionary Young Turk movement of the Religious Right (historically a sure sign of the demise of empire), the ever growing disparity of wealth as exemplified perfectly by the walled cities of the
West Coast and maintained by the cap on the payroll tax which also is destroying SSI, a "progressive" tax system so laden with loop holes and layers the top income earners only pay 27% in total taxes while the bottom 60% pay 40%, a healthcare system that even Cuba's is superior to that is the joke of the developed world and kills our competitiveness with ridiculous overhead because the filthy rich are heavily vested in the insurance industry (re: Investment Brokerages) and pharmacuetical industries (re: Advertisers for drugs invented at the US taxpayor's and tuition payor's expense in our universities), the sick devotion to the individual self above all other things leading to a generation of children with "ADD" (re: MTV) broken homes and mass depression, the flawed head-count based Electoral College (re: the census) that put's dingbats from states like Wyoming in the halls of power, 2 year terms for representatives that essentially require endless democracy-pandering campaigning over careful law-making, the looting of Social Security beginning under Carter and played out by every "president" since, draconian drug laws designed to eradicate entire social classes for the sake of racism resulting in a virtual police state that does everything but protect the public from anything that could actually harm them (good job on DUI prevention, though), local school systems that are all exactly alike and all suck instead of regional systems with a variety of school types, a university system that is so expensive people can not be educated in anything but law and medicine if they ever hope to be able to pay back the ludicrous loans, the destruction of the labor sector (see above: stagnant wages) both directly and because of overhead (see Insurance) and "free trade" that is only free to everyone else, the Young Earth Creationist movement and it's ties to Home-Schooling which will undoubtedly lead to a country filled to the brim with poor and uneducated Branch Davidian-types, trade policy akin to running America like a bordello that rapes the poorest and most vulnerable nations through agro commodity dumping, the death of the Line Item Veto, Clarence Thomas (enough said there alone!), the raping of the people's national forests for lumber (under the guise of "fire control") and mining and oil interests, regulatory infrastructure that puts Martha Stewart in prison but can't do a damned thing about Ken "Kenny Boy" Lay, the abandonment of the Antitrust laws by the FCC and other regulatory bodies leading to the monopolization of cable television and radio and television and music production and computers and a cadre of other sectors leading to a artistic culture akin to Nero's Rome, a military industrial complex that sucks off 20% of our GDP and forces us to ill-thought-out wars just for the sake of it...
Oosh... I'm out of breath... Anybody?

Great post. You put some effort into it. I agree whole heartedly that this has been going on for some time. You are also correct that we should have woken up (if that is a real word) after the first Twin Towers boming. We were asleep at the wheel during those years.

Sorry. I meant to put that comment in the post above about terrorism. I read through and responded in the wrong post.

TheChosenOne: Well in my opinion it is kind of hard to reply to a post when it is just a bunch of random shit thrown out all at once but I guess I'll try and reply to some of the 50 points trying to be made all at once. Sorry just my observation.

TheChosenOne: Well the Liberals have the same access to the PUBLIC AIRWAVES for 24 hour free advertising and have tried numerous shows that have done nothing but fail. The reason the Liberal talk radio shows have failed, one and one reason only: Kind of hard to have a show when you have no ideas to present! Liberals don't have ideas! They only know how to bitch and moan about other parties solutions! Oh, what is the current plan on the table by any Liberal on Social Security (raising taxes doesn't count because that's there solution to everything) so, what's the plan except for scaring the shit out of the elderly for the past 15-20 years. What is there plan for Healthcare. Oh, that's right, they don't have a plan.
TheBastard's wrote: "regulatory infrastructure that puts Martha Stewart in prison but can't do a damned thing about Ken "Kenny Boy" Lay."
TheChosenOne: I always love this one. If you commit a crime worry about yourself not about what everyone else has gotten away with. Martha Stewart (the bitch) lied under oath...period. Ken "Kenny Boy" Lay stole and hopefully will be held accountable for his actions I have no simpathy for rich or poor people who commit crimes hopefully they all get what's coming to them.
TheBastard wrote: "the stagnant wages spanning an entire generation brought about by Reagan and Greenspan and their "inflation control".
TheChosenOne: I thought Bill Clinton and Alan Greenspan were responsible for the greatest economy we've ever had? Now, because it's not so great (but not poor by any means) it is Ronald Regan and Alan Greenspans fault. I'm scratching my head with this one.
TheBastard wrote: " the reactionary Young Turk movement of the Religious Right (historically a sure sign of the demise of empire".
TheChosenOne: Well considering I'm not all that religious I do comprehend what has been going on with this and one word comes to mind, VALUES. Wow, ever since the great Liberal judges in this country have taken away our VALUES by legislating from the bench (over the past 10-15 years) our great country has gone to shit. I am not "religiously right" but I'd go that way any day of the week then with Liberals who have NO VALUES what so ever!

TheChosenOne: Didn't know it was a crime to be wealthy or strive to be wealthy. I'm not going to go through this again because I already posted it in an earlier post but as far as SSI and pay roll taxes go visit www.rushlimbaugh.com and scroll three quarters the way down and it will give you who really pays the taxes (gov't stats not Rush Limbaugh's) not the bullshit you have spewed out here. Let's try using common sense and reverse thinking on this one. The poor pay hardly any money into taxes because dah, they don't make enough to be taxed on. The middle class make some money but only have so much they can be taxed on also, dah. So, who the hell is paying all these taxes then? The top 1% dah! Example: If a married couple makes gross $250,000 (combined) they will only take home about half of it because of taxes. If a single or married couple makes $400,000 a year they will only take home half of that. Why? TAXES. If I was married or single and making $20,000 a year I'm going to take home 90% of it because I DON'T make enough to be in THE HIGHER TAX BRACKET.

TheChosenOne: Please visit my post March 5, 2005 American Victims of Mid-east Terrorist Attacks since 1970. You need to have your head checked for saying, "just for the sake of it..." The only ill-thought out something might in fact be your thinking. Ever think about that?
Anways, don't agree with your thinking but at least you do think and debate. I enjoy the blog and the opportunity to get kicked off of it....lol hugs and kisses to all.

Emmets,
I don't know who exactly you are, but thank you for bolstering my pride in the independence of my thought. Perhaps one day you will shut off the Fox "News" and the Rush and Sean and think for yourself. I hope you do.
